2002 L'Etincelante, Champagne Tarlant

The long awaited 2002 from Tarlant is remarkable. l'Étincelante means 'sparkling' and Benoit considers this one of his best wines, ever. Notes of roasted lemon and a hint of thyme on the nose, with amazing persistence and such salinity and depth on the palate. Incredible.

2002 L'Etincelante, Champagne Tarlant

An assemblage of 57% Chardonnay, 29% Pinot Noir and 14% Pinot Meunier, the 2002 Millésime Prestige l'Étincelante (literally: the sparkling one) opens with an exciting bouquet that displays lovely matured yet precise fruit aromas along with brioche, stony and flinty notes. On the palate, the 2002 is intense, firm and vibrantly fresh, showing a juicy, chalky texture and stimulating salinity in the long yet still young finish. This is one of the best vintage Champagnes I have tasted here so far.

Champagne Tarlant

The Tarlants have been making wines in the Vallée de la Marne since 1687. There hasn’t been one generation skipped in over 300 years. Traditions run deep here, much to the benefit of this region’s history and future: the family continues to grow all seven permitted varieties in Champagne, and produce one of only five ungrafted wines in the whole region. With a focus on zero dosage, long ageing, and site expression, the terroir and the tradition of Tarlant are in the safe hands of brother and sister Benoit and Melanie Tarlant, who continue to drive forward this important, and brilliant, grower Champagne.
