N/V Le Cotet, Jacques Lassaigne

N/V Le Cotet, Jacques Lassaigne

Strictly limited to 6 bottles per customer

100% Chardonnay. "One of Champagne's most exciting producers is Emmanuel Lassaigne'' says William Kelley in his Wine Advocate report, noting his "style is powerful and vinous but also racy and electric." He owns just 3.5 hectares of old vine Chardonnay in the unsung village of Montgueux in the Aube. His wines have done much to put this region on the map, and he has achieved a lot in a short space of time. In 2002 he had just two customers. So to go from there to be recognised as one of Champagne's greats is no mean feat. He neither fines or filters, and uses very minimal sulphur dioxide. This comes from 0.6ha of 45 year old vines. It is a blend of 76% 2015, 14% of oak aged 2014 and 10% coming from bottled wines going back to 2002. An oxidative style of Champagne, this is as rare as it is wonderful.

Tasting notes

The latest release of the NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Le Cotet was disgorged in March, and it's based on the 2015 vintage, with some 10% older bottled wines that have been "remise en cercles." Offering up lovely aromas of lemon oil, white flowers, mandarin and pear, along with some autolytic top notes of warm bread, the wine is medium to full-bodied, vinous and structured, with a racy spice of acidity, a tightly wound core and a long, chalky finish. It's a powerful but tensile Blanc de Blancs that comes from a plot of old vines planted in 1964.
