2019 Muscadet de Sèvre et Maine sur lie, Cuvée One, Louis Métaireau

Made in much smaller volumes than the Grand Mouton cuvée, this is from a selection of the oldest vines on the property, planted in 1937. These vines reach excellent maturity, and the grapes are always picked on the first day of harvest. This has a wonderful perfume of lemon verbena and white flowers. There is a lively intensity here.

2019 Muscadet de Sèvre et Maine sur lie, Cuvée One, Louis Métaireau
Louis Metaireau

The name of this domaine has disappointingly little to do with sheep: rather, Mouton comes from the French word for a small hill, Motte. Sèvre et Maine is probably Muscadet’s most famous area, and Marie-Luce Métaireau and Jean-François Guilbaud have, since 1988, crafted one of the very best examples. This is their flagship wine, and comes from vines that date back to 1937, giving serious density and concentration.
