Louis Métaireau Grand Mouton lies in the heart of the Loire Valley’s Muscadet appellation, sitting between the rivers Sèvre and Maine. Louis Métireau, with his daughter Marie-Luce, amassed the well-placed vineyards that now make up the domaine during the 1980s. Today, Marie-Luce and her husband Jean-François Guilbaud run the 23 hectare estate, the name of which has little to do with sheep: rather, Mouton comes from the French word for a small hill, Motte. Sèvre et Maine is probably Muscadet’s most famous area, and Marie-Luce and Jean-François have, since 1988, crafted one of the very best examples of this region. Their commitment to quality is clear. They use sustainable growing methods, hand harvest their grapes and vinify each plot separately. With some of their vines dating back to 1937, these impressive wines have serious concentration and density.
