2017 Cornas Champelrose, Domaine Courbis

This brilliantly-priced Cornas is aged in 3-5 year old barriques, and is a charming, silky, delicious wine in 2017. The perfect introduction to the northern Rhône.

2017 Cornas Champelrose, Domaine Courbis

TASTING NOTES

This year, I preferred the Champelrose (which sees less new oak) to the les Eygats. The 2017 Cornas Champelrose is herbal and complex, with suggestions of orange zest and licorice accenting plummy fruit. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, it's supple, dense and powerful, with a long finish.

Domaine Courbis

Winemaking has been the Courbis family vocation since 1587. Today, his sons Laurent (the vinifier) and Dominique (who runs the vineyard) make wines in five appellations, including in St.-Joseph for more than 400 years and in Cornas since 1982. The modern, polished style of Domaine Courbis belies the historic roots of the family, and it has long been considered one of the top concerns in the Northern Rhône. This domaine is the perfect example of modern vinification meeting classic viticulture.
