Dark bramble fruits mark a lovely, expressive nose, carrying on to an intense yet mineral palate. The tannins are present and firm. Balance is clear from start to finish, underscoring Laurent’s decision to use barriques three to five years old rather than new oak.
The entry-level Cornas from Courbis, the 2016 Cornas Champelrose sees no new oak. It offers briary aromas of red raspberries, a velvety, open-knit texture and a long finish tinged with orange zest and clove.
