2011 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, La Combe des Fous, Clos St. Jean

2011 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, La Combe des Fous, Clos St. Jean

This wine comes from a 13 hectare plot in what is known as the ‘Valley of Fools’ – so called when, in the early 20th Century, the founder of Clos St Jean attempted to plant vines in a small area covered with huge stones. While perceived to be madness at the time, today this is among the most sought-after land in the appellation. Incredibly rich and perfumed on the nose, with pretty, feminine notes of rosemary, lavender and violets; this is a deeply captivating wine. On the palate, it is opulent and juicy, with fresh cassis, blueberry and a little bramble fruit, accompanied by hints of mint and a little mocha. While very fine and graceful, with tightly-knit tannins that are very precise and soft, there is an underlying power and complexity hidden deep in the core that will enable this wine to go on.
(Given 93-96 points in the Wine Advocate, Robert Parker)
