2009 Hermitage Rouge Classique, Marc Sorrel

2009 Hermitage Rouge Classique, Marc Sorrel

Marc Sorrel is a relative new-comer to winemaking, having originally trained as a chemical engineer. All in all he rents or owns a total of 4 hectares of vineyard, primarily in and around the hill of Hermitage, with one hectare in Crozes-Hermitage. The wines are generally traditionally styled and will repay the patient, displaying great complexity and depth with time. A blend of fruit from the vineyards of Bessards, Greffieux and Plantiers, with an average vine age of 40 years, we don’t normally buy this cuvée. However, this year it was impossible to resist: beautiful to look at in the glass, with vibrant scents of violet, cassis and cream. Fine-grained tannins and deep, almost savoury notes are balanced by an attractive freshness. M. Sorrel stated this is the best ‘Classique’ he has ever produced.
