2006 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Château de Beaucastel

A very impressive 2006, deep in the glass, with steadily emerging aromas of black cherry, blueberry and currant. In addition there is that smoky, almost forest-like aroma that Mourvèdre often brings to bear. Though the fruit seems forward here, there is more backbone than one might expect of the vintage. Mouthfilling, with beautifully ripe fruits and notes of garrigue and even beef stock. This is a rich wine that nonetheless retains its poise and focus. Admirable structure and precision. This will need a little more patience than many this vintage. Another great Beaucastel and a wine which has been compared to the 1988 by the Perrins.

2006 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Château de Beaucastel
Famille Perrin

Dating back to 1549, Château de Beaucastel may be the oldest estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, now managed by four members of the Perrin family. One of the first estates in the region to utilise organic viticulture, they are known for their use of all 13 permitted grape varieties, particularly Mourvèdre, resulting in powerful, generous wines. As well as red and white Châteauneuf, the estate produces a Vieilles Vignes Blanc from Roussanne and the extremely rare cuvée, Hommage à Jacques Perrin.
