2023 Chablis 1er Cru Vosgros, Domaine Gilbert Picq

2023 Chablis 1er Cru Vosgros, Domaine Gilbert Picq

The estate has a total of 3.5 hectares of Vosgros in two parcels. The larger parcel has vines dating back to the 1960s while the other smaller parcel was planted in the early 1980s. Exposed southwest, its soil is brown marl limestone, giving wines which open with citrus and stone fruit before a wave of salinity floods the palate. In 2023 this is quite brilliant with a mineral-etched focus.

Tasting notes

Two thirds of the holding dates back to 1960-2. A paler lemon yellow and at the moment a much more elegant nose. Plenty of salinity here behind the white fruit. Then the extra flesh I tend to find in Vosgros. Its showing really well, very pretty with distinction. Properly on the stones here. Drink from 2027-2035. Tasted Jul 2024.

The 2023 Chablis Vosgros 1er Cru shows a small reduction when taken directly from vat. It eventually offers shucked oyster shell on the nose, quite strict and focused. The palate is very smooth, a little creamier in texture compared to the Vaucoupin. Touches of lemongrass and Vervane flowers lend intrigue on the finish. Real panache here and it may have its nose in front come bottling.
