2014 Chablis Grand Cru Valmur, Jean-Paul Droin

Made with fruit from a 1 hectare parcel, wines from Valmur are typically powerful and this is no exception. Whilst the nose is pretty with hints of orange flower-water, the palate is loaded with dense citrus, green apple fruit, and minerals. Judicious use of oak lending a richness to the wine, this is stunning, and more than equal to Clos in quality and structure.

2014 Chablis Grand Cru Valmur, Jean-Paul Droin
Domaine Jean-Paul & Benoît Droin

Present in Chablis since at least 1620, nobody understands Chablis better than the Droin family. Jean-Paul (J.P.) first put the estate on the map, and it’s now Benoît in charge. He’s the fourteenth generation at the helm, since 1999. That was the same year the Droins built a state-of-the-art winery, in the shadow of the Grands Crus. Benoît has increased quality considerably. He uses less new oak, making Chablis that’s crisp, precise, and that shows differences between each vineyard clearly.
