2023 Meursault 1er Cru Blagny, Michel Bouzereau

2023 Meursault 1er Cru Blagny, Michel Bouzereau

Blagny sits high up, 400m above the heart of the Meursault commune. This altitude brings a focused freshness to the wines. It has notes of ripe citrus, with a richly mineral seashell note - not unlike Chablis - on the nose. The soil is white limestone up here, and this makes for a scintillating palate. It feels straighter than the Grands Charrons, in many ways, more like a Puligny in profile than a Meursault. Saline, mineral, elegant and powerful.

Tasting notes

The 2023 Meursault Blagny 1er Cru lacks the energy and focus of the Grands Charrons that precedes it, and is a bit muted at this point. The palate is well balanced with a slightly viscous opening. It is crisp and focused, though I am seeking a little more mineralité and tension on the finish. Fine, but earlier drinking than the 2022.

Pale lemon colour. An attractive, fresher nose, some fresh herbal notes on a white limestone base, nothing yellow here. Slightly more austere as befits Blagny. Good tension, and pleasing persistence. Drink from 2028-2033. Tasted Oct 2024.
