2022 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot, Alex Moreau

2022 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot, Alex Moreau

Morgeot borders Santenay at the south end of the village, and is not only the largest premier cru in Chassagne, but the largest cru in the Côte d’Or. Alex’s parcel has the benefit of old vines - 50 years old, and their concentration combined with Alex’s practice of long, slow fermentation has resulted in a smoky, textural, delicious expression.

Tasting notes

Pale lemon colour. Softly oaked on the nose, as ever hard to put a descriptor to the personality of this vineyard. The wine does though show an impressive building up of intensity to the back of the palate. Full in the mouth, then finishes fresh, says Alex. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted: November 2023.

Only from old vines in Fairendes. Clear pale lemon. The nose is entirely white fruit and indicates the power to come on the palate. There is a fine backbone to this as well as the habitual flesh of Morgeot, and the oak component is absolutely in harmony. This will make a gorgeous bottle with appropriate (10 year) age, even if accessible before. There is a light citrus wash to keep it fresh and a particularly long finish. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: November 2023.
