2024 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes, Domaine François Buffet

2024 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes, Domaine François Buffet

This is arguably the greatest site in Volnay. Marc-Olivier is lucky to have two parcels here. The ‘young vines’ are a mere 50 years old, and the old vines very much older. This is the stuff of dreams: red fruit tenderness, a Volnay austerity and grip on the back palate, and a seductively long finish.

Tasting notes

The 2024 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru has a generous nose, perhaps showing just a patina of oak compared to Buffet's other cuvées at the moment, though that will be absorbed with time. The palate is less austere than previous vintages, something observed by Buffet himself, thanks to its pliant tannins and purity of fruit. This gently fans out on the finish. Delightful.

A little deeper crimson in colour, and a little more punch to the raspberry fruit on the nose. Slightly sterner on the palate than the other Volnays, a little more rigid but the tannins are still supple enough. Drink from 2029-2034. Tasted Oct 2025.
