2023 Le Musigny Grand Cru, Marchand-Tawse (Vignes de la Famille Tawse)

2023 Le Musigny Grand Cru, Marchand-Tawse (Vignes de la Famille Tawse)

Cellar Circle Exclusive

This grand cru needs little introduction. It is, in the eyes of many, the greatest site in Burgundy, where Pinot Noir reaches its apogee. The Tawse Musigny is always a fine-boned wine, and made in an elegant style that means it approaches its drinking window ahead of some neighbours’, but with the signature Musigny svelte-like tannins on full display. Destemmed by hand, it has a lightness of touch about it that sets it apart. Volumes in 2023 are mercifully better than in 2021, but this is still a rare and highly sought-after wine that has queues of buyers for just a handful of bottles.

Tasting notes

The 2023 Musigny Grand Cru comprises almost two barrels this year (1.8 to be precise!) It has a very elegant, finely delineated bouquet that's quite peppery in style even though the stems were cut by hand. The palate is medium-bodied with a citric entry, orange rind interlacing the red fruit, moderate depth and a harmonious finish. Drink this over the next 15 to 18 years.

Hand destemmed. Two barrels made, both new. Ruby with a crimson edge. The Musigny sits completely apart from all the other wines in the cellar in style. It starts with its Musigny, or possibly more Amoureuses sensuality and then really soars entirely in small red berry style. More of a mineral acidity at the back, and immensely persistent. Is it a classical Musigny? Maybe not, but it is really fine. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted Nov 2024.
