2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Etelois, Marchand-Tawse (Vignes de la Famille Tawse)

2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Etelois, Marchand-Tawse (Vignes de la Famille Tawse)

This is a very special village lieu-dit. It is sandwiched between two Grands Crus: Charmes-Chambertin and Griotte-Chambertin. Most people who own vines here bottle it separately, as its character is of such high quality, it approaches premier cru levels of complexity. This has Gevrey’s classical sour cherry density, and a sweet amplitude of fruit on the palate. It delivers everything you’d look for in quality Gevrey.

Tasting notes

The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Etelois is completely destemmed, with slightly higher alcohol and ripeness than other cuvées from this appellation (13.5%). The aromatics are well defined and focused with dark berry fruit, touches of white pepper, sous-bois and fine complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with impressive structure and depth. It has just a touch of black pepper and balsamic, which are very harmonious with real substance on the finish. This is an excellent Etelois from Marchand-Tawse.

An even ruby purple. The bouquet shows an attractive well-judged ripeness of fruit but less lift, having been destemmed. Two new barrels made out of six. Extra concentration and slightly darker fruit on the second half of the palate. Drink from 2029-2034. Tasted Nov 2024.
