2023 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle, Domaine Rossignol-Trapet

2023 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle, Domaine Rossignol-Trapet

The clay soils of this well-placed parcel produce a wine of depth and roundness. Like the Etelois, there is some black fruit mingled in with the red, and an expressive, aromatic depth. The tannins provide a little more grip than the village wines, and will demand a few more years in the cellar.

Tasting notes

The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Petite Chapelle 1er Cru has some of the best aromatics amongst the Domaine's Premier Crus, with finely delineated, lifted scents of Morello cherries and crushed strawberries. The palate is medium-bodied with excellent grip and structure. Perhaps like other cuvées, it just tails off a little toward the finish, where I am seeking more flesh to cover those tannins—but it is enjoyable all the same.

A lively crimson purple of medium depth. The nose is less forthcoming than Clos Prieur, with a charming juicy red fruit and then some slightly more present tannins. More of a saline finish here. The Petite Chapelle is slightly more backward but may have a little more backbone. Drink from 2030-2035. Tasted Nov 2024.
