2023 Nuits-St-Georges, Aux Barrières, Domaine Michèle et Patrice Rion

2023 Nuits-St-Georges, Aux Barrières, Domaine Michèle et Patrice Rion

Maxime casually shows his Nuits village after his Vosne Premier Cru when you taste the full line up in his cellar: that says really quite a lot. When you taste it you understand why. This is a sensational Nuits-St-Georges. Aux Barrièrres is a vineyard on the northern side of the appellation located just above the vineyard of Vosne-Romanée Aux Réas. From the domaine’s own vines, in 2023 Maxime destemmed all the fruit, and the resulting wine is so elegant and fine, with aromatic purity of liquorice and cherry blossom and gorgeous, fluid energy. Very detailed, this is classical Burgundy through and through.

Tasting notes

The 2023 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Barrières comes from a single 0.70-hectare parcel in the north of the appellation. It doesn't quite click into gear on the nose like the wonderful 2022, rather it is perhaps more discrete with loamy scents percolating through the red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a firm grip. Fine tannins and a conspicuous, almost briny marine influence develop toward the finish, lending another dimension. It coheres nicely in the glass and it should give 12 to 15 years' drinking pleasure.

Ruby with a crimson rim. Less immediately expressive than the Nuits-St-Georges Vieilles Vignes, with in any case a different fruit profile, demonstrating the terroir of the north side of Nuits, beginning to flirt with Vosne-Romanée. The class shows on the second half of the palate and in the persistence, across more refined tannins. Horses for courses. Drink from 2028-2033. Tasted Oct 2024.
