2023 Hautes-Côtes de Beaune Altitude 421 En Bignon, Domaine Boris Champy

2023 Hautes-Côtes de Beaune Altitude 421 En Bignon, Domaine Boris Champy

The Bignon parcel has red clay soil, not dissimilar to that found in pockets of Pommard. It usually produces an easy-going, fruit-forward wine, but the excellent structure found in this 2023 is striking. It still has the signature smooth fruit, but with fine, lightly chalky tannins from well-handled 60% whole-bunch fruit. The 20% new oak rounds out the concentrated cherry character.

Tasting notes

The 2023 Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune Bignon 421 comes exclusively from the lower-yielding vines this year. Champy notes that he could not believe how ripe the fruit was when he checked the grapes before harvest. Perversely, the highest alcohol comes from vines planted at the highest altitude. The Bignon 421 has a lovely bouquet with redcurrant and cranberry scents, the 60% whole bunch seamlessly enmeshed. The palate is medium-bodied with sapid red fruit. It is a little granular in texture, with a smooth, dark-chocolate-tinged, saline finish that lingers long in the mouth. Excellent.

A fuller purple. A bright rich juicy fruit, more raspberry than cherry, with a good bone structure beneath. Carries on nicely across the palate, with a little gourmandise but still the leaner profile of the Hautes Côtes despite the 13.6% alcohol. Drink from 2026-2029. Tasted Oct 2024.
