2023 Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens, Domaine Violot-Guillemard

2023 Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens, Domaine Violot-Guillemard

This magnificent vineyard in Pommard is a hot contender for promotion to Grand Cru. It has iron-rich clay soils and is known for producing wines of robust and powerful structure. This iteration is undeniably luscious and full, with excellently controlled power. While a proportion aged in ceramic eggs, adds another complimentary layer of pure, lifted juice creating a mesmerising result.

Tasting notes

100 whole bunch vinification, made in 2 x 400 litre ceramic, 114 globe, 5 new barrels, all from different coopers, and 2 older barrels. I have now wasted valuable time in calculating that this means 63.5% in wood, 32% in ceramic and 4.5% in glass, with 45.4% new wood for the whole cuvée. A sample from barrel only showed just a touch of wood on the nose, the whole bunch effect slightly muted, rounded, and very backward though the wood tannins are assimilated. The ceramic component had a more neutral nose except for a touch of reduction, and much less resolved tannins. More important is the blend: mid purple, a robust raspberry fruit, more grape than stem here. Very harmonious with a beautiful flowing red berry and cherry fruit with white pepper at the finish. Persistent and harmonious. Drink from 2033-2040. Tasted Oct 2024.
