2023 Pommard 1er Cru Les Petits Epenots, Domaine Violot-Guillemard

2023 Pommard 1er Cru Les Petits Epenots, Domaine Violot-Guillemard

The vines here have an average age of 70+ years and, along with Rugiens, enjoy one of the finest positions in the village. The soil on this side of the village, nearer to Beaune, is extremely complex, with a high mineral and limestone content towards the top of the slope. 100% whole-bunch, with 50% of the wine being aged in ceramic tanks for the first time in 2023, adding an extra layer of freshness and precision to the fruit. This makes for a more ethereal, delicate, precise and elegant expression of Pommard than perhaps we are used to. It will need a little time, but this is a diamond in the making.

Tasting notes

100% whole bunch vinification. Made in two new barrels, one slightly older and a 400-litre ceramic Clayver, all now assembled. A little deeper crimson. The stems give a dry finish after the wild crushed strawberries, less sweet fruit than those cuvees with a lower proportion of stems. Quite structured but I think this will all come together. Drink from 2032-2038. Tasted Oct 2024.
