Combottes sits on the border of Morey and Gevrey, surrounded on all sides by Grands Crus. There are many theories as to why this isn’t a Grand Cru itself, most of which centre on the political angle (a popular theory is that because it is mostly shared amongst growers from Morey, the authorities in Gevrey enjoyed snubbing it). Nevertheless, it is a wonderful wine, with extraordinary ageing potential, and one of the finest Premiers Crus in the Côte de Nuits.
