This remote east-facing vineyard sits at an elevation of 400m. Mark says that on a crisp summer morning you can see all the way to Mont Blanc from here. Its position means, although bathed in morning sun, it does not have much hot afternoon sun, and fruit ripens slowly here. It is often picked last, and in 2022, Mark upped the quantity of whole-bunch to around 40%, succeeding in producing a Gevrey with silky fine tannins and a velvety length.

The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux 1er Cru has a lovely bouquet, the 40% whole bunches beautifully integrated, vibrant red fruit and light sous-bois scents. It has wonderful focus. The palate is medium-bodied with darker berry fruit on the entry than I expected after the nose. It has gentle grip, quite powerful, with a peacock's tail on the finish with a bit of sinew. There is very good potential here, but it's one of the more patient amongst you.
Another vineyard worked by horse. 40% whole bunch, still in barrel, 75% new wood. Mid crimson purple. A beautiful bouquet, with a headiness brought by the whole bunches. Dark red fruit with floral overtones. The stems give some white pepper as well, an there is a fine elegant finish. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: December 2023.
