2022 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru, Marchand-Tawse (Vignes de la Famille Tawse)

2022 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru, Marchand-Tawse (Vignes de la Famille Tawse)

This is Grand Cru in every sense: it is sumptuously perfumed and effortlessly refined, with graceful and persistent power. Where the Tawse Mazoyères is broad, this is long and fine, with a velvety energy. The domaine owns three parcels in this wonderful Gevrey-Chambertin grand cru, including one where the vines are well over 75 years old. It sits at the high point of the Tawse cellar, a culmination of the seriously good winemaking going on here, and a reason why the domaine is singled out year-after-year for critical acclaim. It is hard to overstate the quality on display here, with its long, red-berry, fragrant finesse.

Tasting notes

The 2022 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru contains 45% whole bunches, more than they have used previously. That comes through quite strongly on the nose, possibly obscuring some of the terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins. Finely balanced and harmonious, this has a little more depth than the Mazoyères but shares the same elegance and refinement. I can see this aging over many years. Superb.

45% whole bunch vinification, 7 new out of 9 barrels. A fine red to crimson colour. The nose is less flamboyant than the Mazoyères yet with serious intent. This is solid with an iron rich blood orange tang, then a dark strawberry fruit behind, a firmer backbone – showing clearly how well this wine will age. A magical Mazis-Chambertin with excellent length. Drink from 2032-2045. Tasted: December 2023.
