2019 Pommard Les Cras, Domaine de Montille

This parcel lies at the bottom of the hill, beneath Rugiens. On this side - the Volnay side - of the village, the soils are ferrous, with the iron oxide colouring them red. Low yields combined with 50% whole bunch fermentation means this vigorous soil is tamed, and the wine expresses big, dark fruits kept fresh with crunchy tannins. A nice flicker of blood orange running through the dark fruit gives nuance and complexity.

TASTING NOTES

The 2019 Pommard Les Cras, including 50% whole cluster, has a bold blackberry and raspberry bouquet that was a little backward, as it had only just gone through malo. The palate is structured for a Village Cru, offering good depth and grip and earthy black fruit tinged with tobacco on the finish. Very fine.

Domaine de Montille

Charismatic Etienne de Montille has stewarded the family domaine since taking responsibility in 1995. With an enviable selection of vineyards, careful winemaking with the use of whole bunch altered to suit the vintage, and sensitive élévage, it’s no surprise that this estate continues to rise towards the top. With a cellar overseen by the talented, affable American Brian Sieve and his own son joining the family business, Etienne is doing all the right things to ensure the wines thrive.
