Tasting notes

The 2019 Canon La Gaffelière was picked from 19 September to 7 October at 51hl/ha and sees 60% new oak. It has a very focused bouquet, tight at first and benefitting from an hour's aeration. Eventually it reveals glorious red berry scents mixed with cedar, loamy soil and a pinch of cracked black pepper. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh with a return of that black pepper note right on the finish. Excellent.

Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2019 Canon la Gaffeliere opens with an incredibly evocative perfume of lilacs, Morello cherries, black raspberries, jasmine and Sichuan pepper over a core of ripe black plums, wild blueberries and dark chocolate with touches of iron ore and cumin seed. The medium to full-bodied palate reveals an edifying intensity of electric blue and black fruit layers, supported by a rock-solid frame of firm, finely grained tannins and bold freshness, finishing long with a firework display of fruit, mineral and spicy nuances. A thrilling wine from the get-go and one that should age very well!

Château Canon-La-Gaffelière

Winemaking at Château Canon-La-Gaffelière can be dated back to the 17th century, although its name is derived from the french word gaffet, in reference to the leper colony that was sited on the land. It was bought in 1971 by Joseph-Hubert von Neipperg and the family has significantly improved its quality and reputation. They also own several other Bordeaux wineries including the ultra-pricey, garage wine, < a href="/search?searchtext=la%20mondotte">La Mondotte. Nestled at the base of the St-Emilion slopes, just down the hill from Ausone, Canon-La-Gaffelière’s well-placed vineyards grow a mix of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Thanks to the work of Stephan von Neipperg, the estate is now certified organic and since 2000 has undergone an extensive replanting program. In the winery, emphasis is placed on as little interference as possible to make a wine which authentically expresses the vintage. Today Canon-La-Gaffellière is renowned for its elegance and finesse.
