2014 Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, Margaux

This was the first wine we tasted all week, and it remains one of the most memorable. Production of Pavillon is half of what it was a few years ago having started bottling a third wine in 2009. It has a very high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon (77%) which gives great intensity of fragrance and flavour with notes of blackcurrent, cedar and black pepper. With a palate of great density and balance, this is without doubt the finest Pavillon I have tasted at this stage.
