Château Margaux, is the most important château in the appellation of the same name. Its legendary reputation is as strong today as it was when it was first classified as a First Growth and it has remained a sought after name in the fine wine world. Its five century long legacy began on the landmark of the ‘Mothe de Margaux,’ a small gravel outcrop in an otherwise flat region. The well-drained soils became the perfect place for vines to flourish, allowing Château Margaux to establish its first-class reputation. It has been owned by the Mentzelopoulos family since 1977 and has seen a wealth of Bordeaux experience pass through its cellars. Consultant Oenologist Emile Peynaud advised in the 1970s and in 1983 Paul Pontallier was hired as winemaker where he stayed until his sad passing in 2015. Prominent architect Sir Norman Foster designed the underground cellar and tasting rooms, research centre and wine production facility.
