The combination of Merlot-friendly clay sub-soils in St Estèphe and the absence of August rain that slowed ripening further down in the Medoc mean that the Merlots at Calon-Ségur attained impressive levels and maturity, endowing the wine with exotic flavours and powerful, mouth-filling fruit. The Cabernets were as successful here as they were elsewhere in Bordeaux, and the result of the union between the two varieties is really quite sensual and delicious, with a high level of very ripe tannins. On the finish dark fruit, hints of cocoa (but not a trace of bitterness) and spice bring plenty of complexity already, while the mineral element and tannic structure lend length. Very impressive once again, Calon-Ségur has really climbed a few steps in the hierarchy in recent years.
