In recent years Clos du Marquis has stepped out of the shadow of Léoville Las Cases and has established a reputation for itself as a serious contender that stands shoulder to shoulder with its cru classé rivals. The 2013 consists of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, with the remaining proportion of the blend made up of 18% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc - aged in 50% new oak. Opening on a note of coal tar, blackcurrant and morello cherries, there is plenty of textural richness to the spice laden palate and the interplay between the ripe fruit, fresh acidity and toasty oak is spot on - a poised and superbly balanced St-Julien.
