2010 Château Margaux, 1er Cru Margaux

"The 2010 is a brilliant Chateau Margaux, as one might expect in this vintage. The percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in the final blend hit 90%, the balance Merlot and Cabernet Franc, and only 38% of the crop made it into the Chateau Margaux. Paul Pontallier, the administrator, told me that this wine has even higher levels of tannin than some other extraordinary vintages such as 2005, 2000, 1996, etc. Deep purple, pure and intense, with floral notes, tremendous opulence and palate presence, this is a wine of considerable nobility. With loads of blueberry, black currant and violet-infused fruit and a heady alcohol level above 13.5% (although that looks modest compared to several other first growths, particularly Chateau Latour and Chateau Haut-Brion), its beautifully sweet texture, ripe tannin, abundant depth and profound finish all make for another near-perfect wine that should age effortlessly for 30-40 years. 2010 Château Margaux, 1er Cru Margaux
Château Margaux

Château Margaux, is the most important château in the appellation of the same name. Its legendary reputation is as strong today as it was when it was first classified as a First Growth and it has remained a sought after name in the fine wine world. Its five century long legacy began on the landmark of the ‘Mothe de Margaux,’ a small gravel outcrop in an otherwise flat region. The well-drained soils became the perfect place for vines to flourish, allowing Château Margaux to establish its first-class reputation.

It has been owned by the Mentzelopoulos family since 1977 and has seen a wealth of Bordeaux experience pass through its cellars. Consultant Oenologist Emile Peynaud advised in the 1970s and in 1983 Paul Pontallier was hired as winemaker where he stayed until his sad passing in 2015. Prominent architect Sir Norman Foster designed the underground cellar and tasting rooms, research centre and wine production facility.
