2006 Château Margaux, 1er Cru Margaux

2006 Château Margaux, 1er Cru Margaux

Only 36% of the total crop from the property went into the grand vin, proof that selection was key this vintage. The blend only includes 4% Merlot, the lowest proportion ever, equalling the percentage of Petit Verdot in this vintage. The resulting blend has a high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon. A deep, rich inky purple in the glass, the nose is refined with a brooding cassis fruit character. On the palate, the tannins are dense but fine, creating a sensation of depth and volume and a smooth texture in the mouth. The fruit character is darkly mineral, with cassis, black cherry and graphite to the fore. Balance is the key to the success of this wine, with minerality providing the counterpoint to deep dark fruit characters, and fresh acidity preventing the tannins from seeming dominant. A stellar effort from Margaux.
