2004 Château Mouton-Rothschild, 1er Cru Pauillac

2004 Château Mouton-Rothschild, 1er Cru Pauillac

A blend of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc, 15% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot. 57% of production was selected for the grand vin. It is unusual for the Cabernet content to be shaded back in such a vintage, particularly given Mouton’s erstwhile reliance on a higher than average percentage of Cabernet. The result is still a deep, opaque wine in the glass and solid to the rim with scented, soft, ripe berry fruits in abundance on the nose. The palate is flashy with a pleasing fresh almost minty attack – pure, rich and defined. There is a lovely sense of proportion here and an attractive, ample mouthfeel. Very intense and layered with a flamboyant sense of power on show. Very upfront at present though clearly possesses more class than that might suggest. Fine tannins intermingle with ripe berry notes on the long finish. A glitzy style that is in keeping with Mouton’s approach of the last few vintages.
