The story of Pinot pioneers, Eyrie Vineyards, is a truly inspiring one. In 1965, at the tender age of 24, David Lett headed for Oregon. He left California with little more than 3000 grape cuttings and a firm conviction that Oregon’s Willamette Valley would be the best home for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay outside of Burgundy. In planting their Dundee Hills estate, David and his wife Diana identified the right climatic zone for Pinot Noir, and also selected its most iconic soil: jory, the basalt-based volcanic soil. This was a true eureka moment in the beginning of the story of quality, cool-climate varieties in the Willamette Valley.
