More About Tenuta San Guido

A lover of thoroughbred racehorses and expensive wines, Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta was no stranger to the finer things in life.

Having grown up with Piemontese vine-growing origins, and as a lover of the wines of Bordeaux, it didn’t pass Mario by that the gravelly soils near the Mediterranean coast bore more than a little resemblance to the land of Bordeaux. So he started experimenting with planting the same varieties as made his favourite tipple, creating a wine from Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc that, while just for family consumption, quickly gained a reputation for aging with the best.

It was only when his son, Nicolo, convinced him to release a few bottles in 1970 that the legend of Sassicaia was born. Nicolo had convinced Dr Giacomo Tachis, and legendary consultant winemaker, to come on board, and the team has created an icon of Italy, an estate that is alone in Italy in having its own, unique DOC.

Now one of the world’s most highly scored and coveted wines, it’s famed for its perfect balance of power and elegance.
