Maison Chapoutier
M. Chapoutier is a behemoth of Hermitage in the Northern Rhône. Their long association with the region is down to the quality of their vineyard plots: their single-vineyard Ermitage cuvées from the coveted Hill of Hermitage (red and white), are some of the most sought-after and respected wines in the appellation. The domaine is run by Michel Chapoutier and his daughter Mathilde, who despite the size of their production, have an unwavering commitment to quality. Michel is undoubtedly one of the greatest winemakers of our time, making wines across the Rhône. Their vines are farmed organically and biodynamically, and he is a champion of low yields and ageing in new French oak. Michel took over the family business in 1988, and quality began to accelerate upwards as fast as the domaine grew in size. As well as expanding around his base in Tain l’Hermitage, he has also added holdings in the south of France, Alsace, Spain, Portugaland Australia but his Northern Rhône Syrahs and Marsannes remain the main attraction.
