Château Capbern
Château Capbern is something of a dark horse and for many years this Cru Bourgeois has flown under the radar. Sitting on the eastern edge of the village of St-Estèphe, under the same ownership as Calon-Segur, with the same top winemaking team, and well-placed vineyards which take advantage of the gravel and clay-rich soils of the northern Médoc, Capbern is one of the last few hidden stars of Bordeaux. Its 33 hectares are split between two vineyards, one which surrounds the château and one lies further south towards the Gironde. Capbern had been in the Gasqueton family for ten generations, and until 2013, was known as Capbern Gasqueton. It was sold to Suravenir Assurances who appointed Laurent Dufau, from Mouton-Rothschild, as Director and Vincent Millet as winemaker. Although Dufau left in 2020, Millet remains making superb quality wines.
