The New Penfolds Icon Release

One of the real bargains of the annual Penfolds release, the Bin 311 Chardonnay could reasonably be called a declassified Yattarna. As if often the case, this is a multi-regional blend, all from cool climate sites, and is a delightful mixture of bright, cool climate fruit character, with pink grapefruit, peach, fresh lemon and apple. The there's a richness, with creamier, toastier elements from some new oak. A brilliant wine with texture and complexity that lasts on a long, fresh finish.

Rich and aromatic, with blueberry and blackberry flavours tinged with bergamot, black pepper, five spice and perfumed floral notes. This has a softer, more approachable frame compared to the other Penfolds wines, and will drink well younger. The fruit shines and it finishes long and fresh.

Undoubtedly one of Australia's finest Chardonnays, this is delicate and restrained, with floral complexity and layers of fruit flavours favoured over excessive oak influence. There's a seam of precise acidity carrying the palate through to a long refreshing finish. Just over two thirds of the fruit comes from Tasmania and the remainder from the Adelaide Hills. A lesson in cool climate Chardonnay, this is somehow delicate and powerfully concentrated at the same time.

Always one of our favourites in the Penfolds release, the St Henri is an elegant, fruit-driven example, with concentrated black berry fruit and lovely spice. The palate is silky with delicate earthy notes and aromatic blueberry tones. There's a warmth here but it's well balanced with enough freshness to carry the depth of flavour.

The 2020 RWT Shiraz Bin 798 is powerful and concentrated, a result of small yields in this warm, fry vintage. There's plenty of mouth-coating tannin here with dense, ripe black fruit. Some more aromatic notes of blueberry and mulberry provide more levity and freshness.

A very bold style of New World Cabernet Sauvignon, the Bin 707 is fermented and matured in new American oak barrels, giving the wine powerful flavours of vanilla and coconut. Linear tannins typical of Cabernet provide the structure for long ageing.

Grange is always special, but never more so than in the excellent 2018 vintage. Powerful, spicy and rich with characteristic black berry fruit, black pepper, earthy notes and licorice. Polished and velvety on the palate, with masses of complexity and power to age.
