Château Fuissé
2022 Pouilly-Fuissé Tête de Cuvée, Château de Fuissé Dry | White | Still | 13.5%

This is a brilliant blend of the appellation, drawn from over 50 separate parcels, 4 of which are now actually premiers crus but produced in too small volumes to be bottled separately. This all makes for a very complete and complex portrait of the region. Just over half of the parcels are on Fuissé’s typically clay soil, with the rest on limestone and sandy schist soils. Two thirds of the wine is aged in oak, with 20% of that new oak. The wine displays vibrant nectarine aromas, with a smooth, silky body. This is the flagship wine of the estate, and performs every year.

Ready: 2024 - 2031
2021 Pouilly-Fuissé 1er Cru Le Clos, Château de Fuissé Dry | White | Still | 13.5%

After many years, premiers crus were finally recognised in Pouilly-Fuissé from the 2020 vintage. Château de Fuissé are delighted and proud that their superb monopole vineyard that sits just next to the historic château has been recognised with this classification. It is a 2.7 hectare vineyard, home to many old vines, some of which were planted as far back as 1929. The youngest vines you’ll find here are actually from 1984. There is real intensity in this wine, with toasty, candied lemon peel notes and a subtle anise lift on the nose. The palate is powerful in its concentration and textural complexity, packed full of peach, nectarine and a smattering of fresh ginger. The finish is mineral, saline and persistent, this wine is built to last! It is no surprise it has been upgraded.

2022 Mâcon-Villages, Château de Fuissé Dry | White | Still | 13.5%

This comes from three parcels, two of which lie on the limestone soils near the distinctive Solutré rock bringing a tension and freshness to the wine, and the third on a richer clay site near Pouilly bringing density. It has been vinified in stainless steel only and has wonderful purity and depth of fruit in 2022, packed full of beautiful peachy aromatics and flavours and culminating in a long, pleasing finish.

2022 Pouilly-Fuissé 1er Cru Le Clos, Château de Fuissé Dry | White | Still | 14%

It’s fitting that Le Clos graduated to premier cru status in the 2020 vintage. It is a superb 2.7 hectare monopole vineyard of the domaine, sitting right outside the cellar door. It is home to many old vines, some of which were planted as far back as 1929. Indeed, the youngest vines you’ll find here are from 1984. These east-facing vines grow on three different soils - clay at the bottom, marl in the middle and limestone at the top. It’s the most serious wine in the Château de Fuissé cellar, with complex layers resulting from the patchwork of soil types and vine diversity. It spans apricot, peach, orange peel, honeysuckle and dried honey. The palate is balanced, deep and weighty. A zesty freshness with impressive persistence on the finish.

2022 Chablis, Jean-Paul & Benoît Droin Dry | White | Still | 12.5%

Benoît’s village Chablis is one of the best (the best?) out there, and is always a fast seller. It has a strong following of fans who return to it year after year for its great value and high quality. It’s packed with fruit, and has an energy and persistence that propels it across the palate. There’s a nice chalky freshness and zingy lift.

Domaine Marcel Couturier
2022 Pouilly-Loché, Domaine Marcel Couturier Dry | White | Still | 13%

Hard to put down. At first it is pretty, floral and inviting on the nose. The palate abounds with densely packed stone fruit flavours, cut through by a fresh, taut line of acidity, showing wonderful tension. It comes from three neighbouring parcels near the cellar, from vines with an average age of 45 years. The additional clay in the soil here gives added depth and length to this cuvée.

2020 Mâcon, Aux Scellés, Domaine Marcel Couturier Dry | White | Still | 13.5%

This parcel of young vines (around 15 years old) lies right next to Marcel’s house. He says it’s a wine to open and enjoy young. Given what good value it is you certainly can get stuck in. It has a bright and fruity character, with the vintage’s wonderful natural freshness.

2021 Pouilly-Loché, Domaine Marcel Couturier Dry | White | Still | 15%

This comes from three neighbouring parcels near the cellar, from vines with an average age of 45 years. The additional clay in the soil here gives added depth to this cuvée, as well as more longevity. This is such an enjoyable wine: it has ripeness and personality in spades, with a razor-sharp line of acidity slicing through to a long finish.

2021 Mâcon, Aux Scellés, Domaine Marcel Couturier Dry | White | Still | 13%

This comes from their youngest vineyard (average age of around 15 years) right next to Marcel’s house. He says this is best opened and enjoyed while it is young. This is a vibrant, fresh and energetic cuvee with plenty of juicy peach and citrus aromas and flavours on display. If you are looking for value for money you simply cannot beat this!

This parcel of young vines (around 15 years old) lies right next to Marcel’s house. He says it’s a wine to open and enjoy young, “un vin de plaisir”. Given what good value it is you certainly can get stuck in. It’s exceedingly well-balanced, with bright stone-fruit character, and the vintage’s natural freshness.

2022 Mâcon-Loché Les Longues Terres, Domaine Marcel Couturier Dry | White | Still | 13.5%

Marcel believes this is his best vineyard. It has limestone marl soils and makes a wine with silky ripeness and plenty of freshness. Blind, it could easily come from its grander and more expensive neighbour, Pouilly-Fuissé. In 2022, it is packed full of mouthwatering juicy nectarine flavour. Don’t be afraid to age this cuvée.

It could easily come from its grander and more expensive neighbour, Pouilly-Fuissé. Domaine Samuel Billaud
2022 Bourgogne d’Or Chardonnay, Samuel Billaud Dry | White | Still | 12.5%

This cuvée was new to us in 2021, although Samuel has been making it since 2016. It sees Samuel with his négociant hat on, sourcing some excellent grapes from Mâcon and making a citrus fresh and zingy Chardonnay.

2022 Chablis 1er Cru Mont de Milieu, Samuel Billaud Dry | White | Still | 13%

This comes from three parcels, which are spread across the top, middle, and bottom sections of the premier cru. It is straight and incisive, with a concentrated, saline flicker on the finish. There’s a nice balance between fruit and minerality in this premier cru.

2022 Petit Chablis, Samuel Billaud Dry | White | Still | 12.5%

Samuel jokes that this is ‘Petit Chablis deluxe’. It comes from a parcel just above Grand Cru Les Clos, and is a rare example of Petit Chablis grown on a high proportion of Kimmeridgian, rather than purely Portlandian, limestone. Although Samuel does not distinguish within his range, all the fruit here comes from his own vines, ie ‘domaine’. Indeed, it’s one of the parcels he was most determined to hang onto after splitting from his family estate in 2009. It was so badly frosted in 2021 that none was produced, so we are thrilled to have it back in 2022. It is focused and precise, with lemon zest and salty minerality running through it, and a peachy, smooth as silk length.

2022 Chablis, Samuel Billaud Dry | White | Still | 12.5%

Samuel’s Chablis is an absolute go-to. It’s a blend of three parcels, picked and vinified separately. Together they contribute complexity, richness, and minerality: that’s a pretty good combination for a Chablis, with impressive depth of fruit and a satisfying, fleshy weight, and its persistent length is clean-cut and refreshing. It’s one of our fastest sellers each year, and invariably sells out en primeur, so you need to buy early (well worth having).

2016 Chablis 1er Cru Mont de Milieu, Samuel Billaud Half Dry | White | Still | 13%

A premier cru that often punches with the Grands Crus, Mont de Milieu is a charming, intense, powerful Chardonnay in 2016. There's notes of oyster shell and gun flint, as well as orange peel and spice. Delicious and will only get better.

Domaine William Fèvre

2022 Chablis Grand Cru Bougros, William Fèvre Dry | White | Still | 12.5%

William Fèvre owns half of the Bougros lieu-dit, so it’s no wonder theirs is the best example you will find. Its clay soils make a flattering, comparatively early-drinking grand cru, which will show well from early on. The nose is brimming with the scent of freshly cut grass and the palate has an open, peachy texture. Every year we remark what good value this is, and 2022 is no different.

2022 Chablis 1er Cru Vaulorent, William Fèvre Dry | White | Still

Vaulorent is technically part of Fourchaume, the largest premier cru in Chablis, and is the only premier cru to share the same slope as the grand cru. It has very chalky soil and produces a wine of power and silky tension. The 2022 has a delicious nutty reduction, leading to a palate with a powerful drive. It is a highlight in an already stellar line-up.

2022 Chablis 1er Cru Beauroy, William Fèvre Dry | White | Still | 12.5%

Beauroy is located within Troesmes, and the Fevre parcel is home to old vines, all around 55 to 60 years old. It shows mineral structure and fruit density, but its overall frame is lighter on its feet than some others in the lineup, and it will be one of the more forward drinking of the premiers crus.

2022 Chablis, William Fèvre Dry | White | Still | 13%

The Fèvre Chablis comes from 40 parcels scattered across four hectares, from vines with an average age of 50 years. Much of these are grown around Chichée, near Vosgros, and give the quality you might expect in a premier cru. The result is a village Chablis of brilliant precision, with a long voluminous finish.

Vaulorent is technically part of Fourchaume, the largest premier cru in Chablis, and is the only premier cru to share the same slope as the grand cru. It has very chalky soil and produces a wine of power and silky tension. The 2021 is so velvety and enticing, you almost don’t feel the power of the wine underneath the texture. Concentrated peach, apricot and a wonderful fresh grapefruit pithiness transcends, with a finish that is complex, long, saline and very fine - super!

2022 Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons, William Fèvre Dry | White | Still | 12.5%

Vaillons is a warm, sunny premier cru, much admired in the region. Fèvre has a substantial 3.5 hectares right in the middle of the slope. Their 55-year-old vines produce concentration and ripeness in the wine. This 2022 is bursting with floral aromatics: white blossom and jasmine spice. It is delicious already, but will age brilliantly too.

2022 Chablis Grand Cru Vaudésir, William Fèvre Dry | White | Still | 12.5%

Vaudésir is shaped like an amphitheatre and catches the sun. As a result, the fruit ripens early here, and it needs to be picked at just the right time. This 2022 is a real gear-change in the cellar: it shows the hallmarks of a truly great terroir. Its fine-boned energy is so pretty in youth and will maintain its striking beauty with age. Aromatically complex, zingy and detailed.
