Syrah

The 2021 Syrah is a brilliant iteration of this legendary wine from Boekenhoutskloof. This outstanding vintage has resulted in a wine that has delicacy and focus, but also incredible structure. Notes of violet and dark fruit, and lots of energy on the finish. Spectacular.

Quickly gaining cult status, this is a spicy, peppery, elegant style of Syrah with an almost ethereal lift. Focus and supple on the palate with notes of wild herbs, iris, blood orange, and black cherry it offers just a little ferrous twist on the finish. Extremely fine.

This has more intensity and up front fruit than the 2017 at the same stage. There’s really crunchy berries here, notes of pepper spice, and then also a lot of fynbos and spicy complexity. Such a brilliant Syrah for the price.

A blend of fruit from three sources: 63% Elgin, 30% Polkadraai Hills, 7% Cape Agulhas. The Elgin fruit is largely destemmed, Cape Agulhus using two third whole bunch and the Stellenbosch fruit fermented fully as whole bunches. The resulting wine is fragrant and fresh, notes of juniper and white pepper with fine red and black hedgerow fruit. The tannins are fine-grained and supple with an enticing briny finish.

A true cool-climate Syrah coming from one of South Africa’s coolest growing regions. The wine has notes of wild herbs, woodland fruit, with pepper and liquorice root. There is freshness and focus here with a wonderful grip of tannins creating tension through the mid-palate. The finish is very long with notes of kelp and tapenade.

Sourced from three cool climate, low-altitude Syrah parcels (50m-80m above sea level), just 8km from the blustery Agulhas coast this vintage sees around 35% whole clusters. This is a saline, briary style of Syrah which shows so much freshness and energy. Peppery notes of juniper, dried sage, and iris mingle with the red and black cherry fruit with a saline, iodine edged finish.

The 2022 Porseleinberg opens slowly, gradually, from the glass. A wine not to rush. Clearly a wine drawn up from below, it shows a persistent, mineral-etched focused. White pepper, wild herbs, subtle dark berry fruits and black tea mingle together. With air, the floral elements take flight giving violets, iris, and even dried lavender. The tannins are clothed in fruit but offer sinewy grip with accents of fresh earth and a ferrous, sanguine note. The wine is fermented and aged in foudres and 15% concrete with around 95% whole bunches. A profound Porseleinberg.

100% whole bunch fermented, this is the most serious of the Syrahs from the Rall range. Dried thyme, black pepper, with compact bramble and black cherry fruit on the palate there is a note of iris and oyster shell here too. The finish is supple and extremely long with an accent of black olive tapenade.

One of the best value Syrahs in our range, the 2023 is a continuation of the brilliant form in the 2021 and 2022. The essence of Syrah here with violets, purple fruit, black pepper, with fleshy plum notes on the palate while, all the time, remaining fresh and elegant.

From a single parcel in the northern part of Elgin the 9c clone is known to produce Syrah that is delicately scented and floral. The wine is medium bodied with notes of white pepper and lavender. The palate delivers flavours of plum and black cherry with real freshness on the finish.

90% whole bunch fermented this is a wonderfully expressive Syrah giving notes of tapenade, fresh earthy, grilled meat, as well as iris and liquorice root. The fruit has a seamless quality with a sinewy, supple feel to the tannins that ends with a peppery lift.
