This is an impressive malbec from Belasco de Boquedano. On the nose notes of violets, pure berry fruit, and a hint of crushed herbs. There’s lovely freshness on the palate, here, with a lick of oak spice, and silky, enveloping tannins. Beautifully balanced, and absolutely delicious.

This is one of the best Malbecs we’ve come across, and the 2012 delivers in spades. Now at 6 and a half years old, it’s absolutely delicious, with notes of prune and ripe plum, a hint of spice, and fine acidity on the finish. At this price, it’s simply remarkable.

“The 2009 Malbec Argentino is a blend of the vineyards of Adrianna and Nicasia and is 20% whole cluster and 80% whole berry fruit. The former is co-fermented with Viognier and the latter co-fermented with Cabernet Franc. It is aged in French oak barrels, of which 60% are new. It has a more opulent bouquet than the individual blends, with dark cherries, iodine, minerals and blueberry that are all beautifully defined. The palate has a dense, weighty entry with layers of ripe blackberry and boysenberry fruit laced with crushed stone and a touch of graphite. It is sourced from the vineyard that names the wine and that is located in Altamira. The Malbec grapes fermented in open barrels and cement vats with 15% whole-cluster Cabernet Franc. There is one extra level of precision and harmony here. It has an elegant nose and the palate almost reflects the tension in the skin of the grapes with its a velvety texture and great acidity. Very primary at the moment on the nose, with dark fruits, violet notes, and a sprinkling of well-integrated sweet fruit. In the mouth the power builds, but the thread of freshness ensures a weightless quality. With excellent acidity, fine-grained tannins, and intensity of flavour, the 2013 Caro has all the characteristics required for a long life ahead.

This Chardonnay comes from vineyards at 1,400 metres above sea level, and is a taut, precise, yet generous and textured wine. There’s lemon oil and acacia blossom, and a wonderfully pure, focussed finish. A simply brilliant Chardonnay, from one of South America’s best.

Catena and the Rothschilds continue to show what can be achieved in Mendoza. The 2015 Caro is superb: blackberries and plums, with notes of fresh herbs and smoke. It’s beautifully balanced, with ripe tannins and a freshness that gives a touch of salinity. Already impressive, and there’s clearly a long life ahead of this.

The 2018 vintage of Caro is heralded as the best to come from this pioneering collaboration between the Rothschilds of Bordeaux and Catena of Argentina. Made mostly from Malbec, with 24% Cabernet Sauvignon to provide backbone and linear tannins. Rich, fruitcake aromas with blueberry notes providing beautiful aromatic lift. Mineral freshness and sweet spice add complexity and there is a silkiness to the wine that will develop with time in bottle.

From the high-altitude Adrianna Vineyard, White Stones is one of a pair of Chardonnays made by the Catena family from this special place. The winemaking is exactly the same for the two wines, with no new oak, no battonage and wild yeasts. The White Bones shows intense, fresh lemon barley, light tropical fruits, lavender, fresh mint and eucalyptus.

"The 2011 Malbec Catena Zapata Adrianna Vineyard is Malbec from the eponymous vineyard in Gualtallary close to 1,500 meters altitude fermented together with some Viognier exclusively from the plots where the soil is rich in calcium carbonate. Nicolas Catena is the celebrated pioneer of winemaking in Argentina, and this celebrated flagship wine has all the hallmarks of a great Argentinian red. This year it is 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Cabernet Franc and 21% Malbec. It's the first time ever that Franc is greater than Malbec, to compensate the warm and dry conditions.
