2009 Bordeaux Dinner - 15 years on, Thursday 12th September 2024, at Clarette, Marylebone Ticket

A retrospective on one of Bordeaux's most renowned vintages

One can't list the great years of Bordeaux wine without mentioning 2009. A warm, generous growing season resulted in similarly boisterous wines - pairing decadence in fruit with richness in texture, and creating wines that have been largely lauded as modern classics.

It wasn't a vintage without some controversy however - this style of wine led some detractors to believe that these might not be wines for the very long term, especially compared to their stablemates in quality - 2005 and 2010.

15 years on, we therefore thought it would be an apt moment to check in on wines from the length and breadth of the region, all of superb quality and highly rated both on release and in subsequent tastings. The joy of 2009 is the ability to approach these wines before needing decades of age, and to be able to appreciate their charm and vivacity already.

Join us for a wonderful evening of wines from this historic vintage, in the Salon Privé at Clarette in Marylebone, a favourite of ours for lively discussion over delicious food.

Spotlight on Aligoté and Gamay Dinner, Wednesday 26th June 2024, Cabotte, London Ticket

A deep dive into Burgundy's lesser-seen varieties

Chardonnay and Pinot Noir need no introduction. Possibly the most famous grape varieties of all - the top expressions of these grapes are known throughout the world as the finest examples of Burgundy.

But Burgundy isn't just home to these two grapes - and their cousins Aligoté and Gamay have a fascinating part to play in the region's history. Rather than a simple wine just used to make Kir Royales, examples of top Aligoté show an elegance and complexity, particularly when made from old vines and from the celebrated Aligoté Doré grapes. In the right hands this grape can make some of the most delicious and characterful white wines in the region.

Gamay is rightly celebrated as the star of Beaujolais, but historically was forbidden in Burgundy - the regions' Dukes were not fans in the 14th Century. But fortunately in subsequent centuries growers realised the potential of the grape, and many make superb Coteaux Bourguignons and Bourgogne Passetoutgrains when blended with Pinot Noir.

For this dinner celebrating these two grapes we've collected wines from some of the best names in Burgundy, including Sylvain Cathiard, Michel Lafarge, Domaine de Villaine and Jean Grivot, as well as a selection of brilliant Beaujolais from some of our favourite producers. It's a great chance to learn more about these lesser-seen styles, which all punch well above their weight when it comes to value. We'll enjoy these wines over the excellent fare at Cabotte, a favourite for wine dinners particularly when Burgundy is involved.

Sparkling Wines from around the World Masterclass, Thursday 4th July 2024 Ticket

Delving into a world of bubbles

With the rise of English Sparkling Wine, the last few years have seen myriad 'England vs Champagne' tastings pitting the two styles against each other (or here in the UK, at least).

But the results have unsurprisingly shown that the two have their own distinct identities, and are just a couple of names in an extensive pantheon of great sparkling wines from all over the globe. As bona fide fizz aficionados, we have long championed alternative styles, whether from South Africa, Italy or even some lesser-known examples from France.

Therefore we thought it high time to have a tasting evening dedicated to bubbles from all around the world, and will be pouring eight of our favourites to compare and contrast. As summer rolls in, there's really no excuse needed to pop a few corks, and take a deep dive into a world of fine sparkling wine.
