2021 Château Guillot Clauzel, Pomerol Dry | Red | Still | 13.5%

Tasted April 2022. A great Pomerol from Guillaume Thienpont. This has lovely floral notes and aromas of truffle. It's broad and expansive on the palate, almost velvety, but then has a slight chalky bite at the end and some saline, mineral notes. Really intense and delicious.

From 70 to 80 year old vines, this is a blend of 60% lampia and 40% michet, and sees 40% whole bunch. The nose on this is spectacular, while the purity and density on the palate are utterly stunning. This is so long, and so fine. A truly special iteration of this wine.

Tasted April 2023. 13.5%. 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot. Fantastic this year, an excellent wine from the Rothschild team. Classical, yet opulent. Exuberant, aromatic nose with fragrant red berries and petals. Pure, blackberry, cherry and plum on the palate, with mouthwatering freshness, delineated stony tannins and hints of graphite. Delicious to drink, fresh and appetising with a core of pure fruit.

2019 Barolo 'Specola' vigna Riva, La Morra, Figli Luigi Oddero Dry | Red | Still | 14.5%

Located in the cru of Rive di Santa Maria in the village of La Morra, the old vine fruit and the La Morra location give this Barolo an edgier and darker profile. Bramble fruits and garrigue aromas are evident on this wine, with hints of truffle giving additional layers. Tannins are firm and chalky and need a couple of years to resolve, but when ready, this wine will be outstanding.

From a single plot of the celebrated Bricco Boschis vineyard, the San Giuseppe is rightfully revered as one of Piedmont's greatest wines. This is so intense and concentrated, with grippy tannins, yet the elegance and refinement that marks out a truly great wine. Complex, long, and detailed, this has to be tried.

2021 Château Tertre de la Mouleyre, St-Emilion Grand Cru Dry | Red | Still | 13%

Tasted April 2022. The 2021 Tertre de la Mouleyre is very fine, with pretty, bright fruits and floral notes. It's very elegant, and has plenty of depth to the dark fruit flavours. The texture is silky and there's an appetising, crushed rock sensation on the finish. Another brilliant vintage from a true gem of St-Emilion.

72 year old vines. Lovely freshness here, dark fruit, tension, power, salinity and nervous energy. This is intense and powerful, with loads of salinity: so mineral, but also lots of burnt orange peel, and some almond kernal. It’s so complex and very well balanced: an astonishing Barolo from a real magician.

Cabutti & Baudana from Serralunga, Mosconi x 3 vineyards, Ravera di Monforte, Liste, Terlo, Paiagallo. This smells amazing: so much perfume and delicacy, there’s wild berries, hedgerow fruit, and lots of freshness on the palate. This is so complex, with amazing length and finesse. There’s lots of creamy merlot character on the 2020 Evangile, a Pomerol which gets better every year we taste it. Lovely silkiness to the tannins, that build through and coat the palate. Very detailed and feel that slight savoury cabernet franc on the finish. Very pure and insanely long. Gets better and better.

2023 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru, Marchand-Tawse (Vignes de la Famille Tawse) Dry | Red | Still | 13%

This is Grand Cru in every sense: its perfume is intoxicating with graceful and persistent energy. It sits at the high point of the Tawse cellar, a culmination of the seriously good winemaking going on here, and a reason why the domaine is singled out year-after-year for critical acclaim. Where the Tawse Mazoyères is broad and dense, this is long and fine, with a vibrant energy. The domaine owns three parcels in this wonderful Gevrey-Chambertin Grand Cru, including one where the vines are well over 75 years old. It is hard to overstate the quality on display here, especially in 2023 with its spicy red fruit aromatics, fragrant finesse, and intricate tannins. Wow.

2017 Barolo Riserva Vignolo, Cavallotto, Piedmont Dry | Red | Still | 15%

From a vineyard that sits within a stone's throw of Bricco Boschis, the 2017 Vignolo is slightly more savoury and broader than the wines from its more famous brother. From a one hectare site in Baudana, in Serralunga d’Alba, and you immediately feel the difference in tannic structure. There’s saline, limestone texture, lots of purity of fruit, and a red strawberry wash across the palate. Very not, with a tonic-like note on the finish.

2023 Meursault 1er Cru Blagny, Michel Bouzereau Dry | White | Still | 13%

Blagny sits high up, 400m above the heart of the Meursault commune. This altitude brings a focused freshness to the wines. It has notes of ripe citrus, with a richly mineral seashell note - not unlike Chablis - on the nose. The soil is white limestone up here, and this makes for a scintillating palate. It feels straighter than the Grands Charrons, in many ways, more like a Puligny in profile than a Meursault. Saline, mineral, elegant and powerful.

2023 Chablis Grand Cru Bougros, William Fèvre Dry | White | Still

William Fèvre owns half of the Bougros lieu-dit, so it’s no wonder theirs is the best example you will find. Its clay soils make a flattering, comparatively early-drinking grand cru, which will show well from early on. The nose is brimming with the scent of freshly cut grass, white peach, and the palate has an open, broad texture culminating in a mineral finish. Every year we remark what good value this is, and 2023 is no different.
