The second wine from Almaviva is fantastic in 2020. Made from the younger vines in the renowned terroir of Puente Alto, it's picked a little earlier to preserve freshness, and is full of ripe red berry fruit, cassis and a creamy texture from maturation in oak barrels. This is approachable, soft, fresh and bright, with lovely balance and some dusty tannins.

This is multi-vintage, but retains plenty of 2019 character with subtle and balanced flavour and a juciness to the fruit. Full of aromatic plum, blueberry and red cherry, as well as fresh herbal notes. Fresh, well-knit and too easy to drink.

Nestled in the Willamette Valley, Beaux Frères has played a pioneering role in Oregon's rise to world recognition for great Pinot Noir. In 2017 the Henriot family of Champagne and Bouchard and Fèvre from Burgundy acquired a majority share of Beaux Frères, with the founders, the Etzel family, remaining as managing partners. The Belles Sœurs is a hand-selected barrel reserve from the three estate vineyards. Extremely elegant and fine with delicate red and black berries and spice on the nose, there's greater breadth and richness on the palate, with considerable finesse and freshness.

Rich from old vine fruit with precise berries and wild strawberry fruit flavours. There's tons of dry spice aroma here too and a seriously long finish. Structured now with mouth-coating tannins, this is built for the long haul.

A delicious, fragrant expression of Sangiovese full of wild strawberry, and savoury-tinged plums. There's plenty of musky, aromatic spice and a long refreshing finish. This is ethereal and light on its feet, you can see why Bibi Graetz has such a cult following.

Cairossa has been owned by the same people as Chateau Giscours in Margaux since 2004 and is based on the Tuscan coast. 2019 is full of creamy red berry fruits and plenty of sappy tannins. There's some crunchier fruit on the palate and some woody herb flavours, as well as some more earthy spice.

The second wine of renowned Clos Apalta, this year Petit Clos is just fantastic, with pure, ripe berry fruit character and long flavours of violets and damson.

The top wine from dynamic Champagne house Thiénot, founded by Alain Thiénot in 1985. Only 3,300 bottles are produced and 2010 is the first year they have not let the base wines go through malolactic fermentation, lending the final Champagne with added tension and brisk acidity. It's 100% Chardonnay, and full of crisp lemon and green apple fruit, with lots of mineral notes and fine jasmine aromas. Long, fine and elegant.

One of the most celebrated wines in the whole of New Zealand, this is a fantastic vintage of Le Sol with fine-grained tannins, broad, rich fruit and savoury notes. The stony soils here give a beautiful elegant, but structured wine that will age for decades.

From Martinborough, now regarded as one of the finest places in the world for Pinot Noir, the Aroha is a beautiful, complex wine with delicate wild berries and light earthy notes of porcini mushroom and spice.

Fresh and textural white wine with pithy citrus, aromatic white peach and pear flavours. There's plenty of herbal notes and white floral notes too. Fresh but with some spicy, nutty flavours from 22% new French oak.

Rich and powerful, with savoury complexity harnessing the exuberant black fruit. There's cassis, black cherry and black plum with tobacco, espresso and cedar. Deep and brooding, there is a firmness to the tannins now that will soften in time, with 43% new oak in the blend. A terrific effort from Todd DeVincezi, Philippe Bascaules and the team.

The 2019 Vin de Constance is disarming in its beauty. Notes of honeysuckle and pear swirl from the glass, with hints of spice and plenty of Seville oranges, too. The palate is so impeccably balanced, you barely feel the sweetness. And there’s such precision of flavour here, too, with so much unfurling in the mouth. This is an extraordinary wine: a bottling that belongs in every cellar.
