Whilst Bandol in Provence is fairly unique in that the Mourvèdre grape constitutes more than 50% of a Bandol red, this versatile variety plays a key, if small, role in many blends throughout the world. It ripens at lower alcohol than Grenache, making it a welcome addition to many Southern Rhône wines, also offering structure, intensity of fruit and perfume. Outside of France it is known as Monastrell in Spain, whilst in Australia it goes into blends of Shiraz and Grenache under the name Mataro.
