Malbec is now synonymous with its Argentine heartlands, where it produces rich, fruity wine from the country’s high altitudes: the perfect match for the national diet of high-quality steaks. However, the Malbec story began back in France, where it was once a key variety in the production of the wines of Bordeaux. It remains the grape of choice in the Pyreneen foothill town of Cahors where it is known as Côt, and the deep wines are typically made in a much more savoury, less fruit-forward style.
