Gewürztraminer
‘Gewürz’ means ‘spice’ in German, and this word both sums up the character of the grape and the foods that it best matches, as it provides a fantastic foil for oriental dishes such as Thai curries. The very best examples of Gewurztraminer are found in Alsace, where it is spelt without the umlaut. Here it is made in a range of styles, from dry and slightly savoury to sumptuously sweet late-harvest and noble rot wines. What unites them all is their complexity and their remarkable aromatics.
