What the wines of New Zealand’s North Island lack in international recognition, they more than make up for in variety and quality. The gravel soils of Hawke’s Bay create Bordeaux blends and Syrah wines of purity and ripeness, whilst Martinborough’s cool climate is producing Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays that consistently impress. Most exciting for Lay & Wheeler, however, are the wines of Kumeu River near Auckland, whose Chardonnays can match and even surpass the very best of Burgundy.
