Château Fuissé
2023 Mâcon-Villages, Château Fuissé Dry | White | Still

This comes from three parcels, two of which lie on the limestone soils near the distinctive Solutré rock bringing a tension and freshness to the wine, and the third on a richer clay site near Pouilly bringing density. It has been vinified in stainless steel only and has wonderful purity and depth of fruit in 2023, packed full of white peach aromatics culminating in a long, satisfying finish with a hint of chalk.

2023 Pouilly-Fuissé Tête de Cuvée, Château Fuissé Dry | White | Still

This is a brilliant blend of the appellation, drawn from over 50 separate parcels, 4 of which are now actually Premiers Crus but produced in too small volumes to be bottled separately. This all makes for a very complete and complex portrait of the region. Just over half of the parcels are on Fuissé’s typically clay soil, with the rest on limestone and sandy schist soils. Two thirds of the wine is aged in oak, with 15% of that new oak. The 2023 displays vibrant white nectarine aromas tightly balanced around a mineral line, with a smooth, silky body. This is the flagship wine of the estate, and performs every year.

Claudie Jobard
2023 Rully Rouge La Chaume, Claudie Jobard Dry | Red | Still | 13.5%

Claudie’s father, in his days of running a plant nursery with access to a huge range of plant material, planted seven different clones of Pinot Noir in this 2.5-hectare site. Now at 45 years old, this diversity, twinned with the quality of vineyard husbandry, means the vineyard is thriving. The different clones call for pruning and harvesting at different times, but it’s an effort worth making, as the wine is texturally sophisticated, lifted, and full of Pinot nuance. It’s open, balanced and extremely drinkable, with a touch (10%) of new oak adding a little sweet spice to the gorgeous red fruit.

Ready: 2025 - 2032
2023 Rully Blanc Montagne La Folie, Claudie Jobard Dry | White | Still | 13%

This is a brilliant example of what Claudie Jobard is up to. It is a fine-boned and refined Rully, with the hallmarks of superb quality fruit and a smashingly good vintage. It comes from a south-east facing stony site, not far from the town of Chagny in the northeast of the appellation. It’s a joyful and pure, citrusy white, mineral with a fine saline thread of acidity running through the fruit.

Ready: 2025 - 2030
2023 Rully Blanc en Villerange, Claudie Jobard Dry | White | Still | 13%

Claudie makes this in exactly the same way as her Rully Montagne la Folie, but the expression couldn’t be more different. It comes from a parcel in the south-east of the appellation, near Mercurey, and makes a wine with an amplitude and volume that gives the wine weight and power. The fruit leans toward nectarines; there’s a lusciousness as well as a delicious salinity to the length of this wine.

2023 Santenay Les Hâtes, David Moreau Dry | Red | Still

Les Hâtes sits in the middle of the village, surrounded by Premiers Crus on well-draining red-tinged soil. It is an early-ripening terroir that makes for a floral, ethereal style of Pinot with lovely proportions. David uses around 10% whole bunches and aims to focus on the floral character as a natural expression of the site which David sees emerge every year. A compelling introduction to Santenay with bright, red berry fruits and a lick of blood orange on the juicy finsh.

2023 Maranges Aux Gryphées, David Moreau Dry | Red | Still

Maranges is the final limit of the Côte d’Or, and a source of crunchy, great value reds, if you follow the right grower. This is actually a blend of village and premier cru fruit (from 1er Cru Clos Rousseau), which David declassifies to give his village Maranges more volume and quality. The name Gryphée is a type of fossilised mollusc found within the limestone soil. This year David used around 15% whole bunches which has given a little peppery lift to the charming dark cherry fruit tinged with crushed violets. Lithe and supple, this is a great buy.

Cyprien makes two Bourgognes, and this is the one that comes from the domaine’s single parcel which lies just beyond the village boundary of Gevrey-Chambertin, but a stone’s throw from the village’s Grands Crus. It is a fairly serious Bourgogne, with an expressive, chewy core to it, offering up the density of Gevrey, with the open fruit to drink well from early on.

Domaine Boris Champy
2023 Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Beaune Blanc, Presse Verticale 382, Domaine Boris Champy Dry | White | Still

The name of this cuvée refers to the winemaking technique which differs by using the vertical press: a type of press used from the middle ages until the 1960’s, when it was replaced by the horizontal press (mechanical and pneumatic). The vertical press marks the style of this wine, with bags of concentration and complexity. It comes from the “Montagne de Cras” plot in Nantoux. “Cras”, or “Crag” in Celtic, means pebbles and the soil is very varied, stony but also full of clay. The 4-hectare plot is made up of 3 hectares of vines and 1 hectare of a natural biodiversity area: scree slopes, hedges, orchards, limestone grasslands with numerous orchids and rare trees. A precise, intense nose of orange rind, honey, and white blossom, is followed by a taut, poised and dynamic palate with well-integrated oak. It is showing a touch of spice amongst the fresh, tropical fruit and is very persistent on the finish. Excellent.

2023 Bourgogne Aligoté Doré, Domaine Boris Champy Dry | White | Still

New to our range for 2023, this comes from 2 parcels at the top of the hill near En Bignon, lying at 421 metres above sea-level. It is fermented in 500 and 600-litre barrels, and has a pure and open nose showing hints of white peach and honeysuckle. The palate is expertly balanced, slickly textural and focussed all the way through the slightly, spicy, saline finish. Wow.

2023 Coteaux Bourguignons, Domaine Boris Champy Dry | Red | Still

This is a new addition to the list in 2023: we just couldn’t resist. It’s made from old vine Gamay grown on the steep slopes of Nantoux (true to its name, unlike many other Coteaux Bourguignons which are grown on the flat plains on the other side of the route nationale). It was vinified with 50% whole-bunch fruit, gently handled in the cellar with low extraction. Some of the vines are ninety-years-old, and the concentration and kick this gives to the wine is notable. It’s gorgeous: juicy, fruit-forward, and joyful. Don’t miss this little rocket.

2023 Hautes-Côtes de Beaune Altitude 377 Le Clou, Domaine Boris Champy Dry | Red | Still

Le Clou is a single vineyard in Nantoux sitting at a precise 377 metres elevation. Its soil is similar to Volnay, with chalky, rocky topsoil over limestone marl bedrock. 90% whole-bunch has been used to great effect here: it has a fine, elegant aroma of maraschino cherries and cinnamon spice, with silky tannins and impressive concentration on the poised finish. 100% 1 year old oak - this is the wine that Boris is making to try and elevate / demonstrate what he is doing in the Hautes-Côtes.

2023 Hautes-Côtes de Beaune Altitude 421 En Bignon, Domaine Boris Champy Dry | Red | Still

The Bignon parcel has red clay soil, not dissimilar to that found in pockets of Pommard. It usually produces an easy-going, fruit-forward wine, but the excellent structure found in this 2023 is striking. It still has the signature smooth fruit, but with fine, lightly chalky tannins from well-handled 60% whole-bunch fruit. The 20% new oak rounds out the concentrated cherry character.

This comes from a blend of the domaine’s young vines with a small dash of extremely old vines, from multiple parcels scattered around the village of Nantoux. Auxey-Duresses is a relatively unknown village of the Côte de Beaune, tucked up above Meursault, next to Monthelie, on the way to St-Romain. This anonymity is in spite of its association with Lalou Bize-Leroy. Comte Armand's vines - in lieu-dit Largillas - sit just above her Les Clous vines. Largillas gives the most spectacular views of the pretty village, and have an enviable mid-slope position for a village parcel. It has wonderful limestone soils, similar to those found on the hill of Corton, though with a much fresher climate, thanks to its elevation. The vines were planted in the 1970s and 1980s, and at full maturity are producing great concentration, leading to interesting and complex layers in the wine. It has great black cherry density with a slight chalkiness to the finish in 2023 and a firm tannic backbone.

The vines are approaching 90 years of age, and yield only tiny volumes of beautiful, characterful fruit, producing a wine with superb phenolic complexity. This vineyard between Chambolle-Musigny and Gilly-lès-Citeaux is one of the best parcels of Bourgogne in the Côte-de-Nuits. Samuel’s Chablis is an absolute go-to. It’s a blend of three parcels, picked and vinified separately. Together they contribute complexity, richness, and minerality: that’s a pretty good combination for a Chablis, with impressive depth of fruit and a satisfying, fleshy weight, and its persistent length is clean-cut, saline and refreshing. Samuel jokes that this is ‘Petit Chablis deluxe’. It comes from a parcel just above Grand Cru Les Clos, and is a rare example of Petit Chablis grown on a high proportion of Kimmeridgian, rather than purely Portlandian, limestone. Although Samuel does not distinguish within his range, all the fruit here comes from his own vines, ie ‘domaine’. Indeed, it’s one of the parcels he was most determined to hang onto after splitting from his family estate in 2009. In 2023, it is both generous and precise, with vibrant citrus, just-ripe pineapple and stony minerality running through it, with a creamy, smooth as silk length.

The Chardonnay of this wine’s name actually refers to the village, although it’s a rather nice nod to the variety that is responsible for the vast majority of the wines produced in Mâcon. Clos de la Crochette is a charming walled vineyard that Dominique Lafon bought in 2003. After a little investigation he discovered it is one of the most historic sites in all of Burgundy, first planted by the monks of Cluny (c.900 AD). This is low-intervention in the extreme: Jean-Claude doesn’t touch the tank during its 12-day maceration and fermentation. Combine this with zero sulphur and 100% whole bunch, and you’d be forgiven for assuming this would stray far onto the funky side of ‘natural’ wine. Yet it remains wonderfully poised. The vines for this cuvée are located just behind the winery and are his pride and joy. The 2023 has a very pretty nose with aromas of plum, cassis and pomegranate jumping from the glass. The palate is very fine and elegant in structure, fine-grained, slightly chalky tannins weave around the supple, concentrated, fresh, black cherry fruit. Long and sumptuous in the finish with a refreshing mineral note throughout.

2023 Beaujolais-Villages Vieilles Vignes, Jean-Claude Lapalu Dry | Red | Still

This Beaujolais-Villages is as energetic and vibrant, fresh and juicy as you’d hope for from a glass of classic Bojo. At just 12.5% alcohol it shows no signs of the extreme heat at the end of the 2023 vintage. In fact, it has the peppery freshness and floral, graphite notes of a fresher vintage. This is thanks to the small amount of high-altitude fruit Jean-Claude buys in, which gives acidity and definition to the richer fruit of his own organically farmed, old vines. It’s undoubtedly a stand-out from Jean-Claude this year, and terrific value for money.

2023 Brouilly Vieilles Vignes, Jean-Claude Lapalu, Beaujolais Dry | Red | Still

This 70 year old parcel of Gamay is situated near Jean-Claude’s cellar on granite soil with an east-facing aspect. The cuvée is made using carbonic maceration, and is everything we want from a Beajoulais to drink young. In 2023, its fresh, vibrant, juicy fruit has wonderful red cherry concentration on the palate leading to a lively, bright finish and a lovely fresh mineral and slightly spicy note through its length. Simply delicious.

Jean-Claude et Romain Bessin-Tremblay
2023 Chablis, Jean-Claude et Romain Bessin-Tremblay Dry | White | Still

This wine is mineral, zingy, citrus-driven, and intense with great drive and depth. Plenty of dry extract gives the palate a serious weight and mineral poise. This may be a wine of humble communal classification, but it has a profound energy, and deserves special attention. Under Diam closure for the first time in 2023.

Justin Girardin
2023 Santenay Blanc Sous la Roche, Justin Girardin Dry | White | Still | 13%

This delicious white comes from a plot of limestone soil high up on the hill. It’s floral, mineral and zippy, with fantastic energy. This delivers the quality and complexity of a village wine for the price not far off others’ Bourgogne Blancs.

2023 Santenay Vieilles Vignes, Justin Girardin Dry | Red | Still

This is a blend of multiple parcels of older vines (the average age is 55 years), which all share in common their mid-slope position. There is quite a lot of flat land and heavy clay at the bottom of Santenay which is less good, so this is an important distinction. These vines are all in the upper part of the village on limestone, and make for an expressive, vibrant, fresh, and distinctive red wine packed with cherry and damson notes. It shows good clarity, elegance, and a long, saline, peppery finish. Cracking value.

Olivier Leflaive
2023 Saint-Romain, Olivier Leflaive Frères Dry | White | Still

Saint-Romain’s wines used to sit at the high-acid end of Burgundy. The elevation here gives the wines a coolness and austerity in cooler years. But in recent vintages, the appellation has come into its own, and now proves a source of deliciously fresh but poised wines, where other appellations are teetering into the overripe camp. This wine comes from various plots, including Sous le Château and En Poillange. It's a refreshing and crunchy white, with limestone minerality and a racy edge.

2023 Montagny 1er Cru, Olivier Leflaive Frères, Côte Chalonnaise Dry | White | Still

Floral, precise, and energetic. This Montagny Premier Cru is a classic example of why the appellation is recognised as one of the top communes in the Côte Chalonnaise. This wine itself is a blend of various sites, and is vinified almost exclusively in oak, with just a fraction of it new. It has this tight, fruit-based minerality and a textural structure, with plump lemon pulp at its core.

2023 Bourgogne Blanc Les Sétilles, Olivier Leflaive Frères Dry | White | Still

Les Sétilles is an outstanding Bourgogne Blanc, and one of the most popular wines on our list. Much of the fruit comes from around Puligny-Montrachet, blended with some from further afield, like the Hautes-Côtes, which brings welcome freshness and tension. Two-thirds of the wine is raised in oak, with just a touch (10%) new. It is precise, full of character, with a mineral bite and a lovely seam of acidity. It is great value for money.

Critic Score
89/100
2023 Bourgogne Blanc Côte d'Or Cuvée Oligocène, Patrick Javillier Dry | White | Still

This brilliant-value Bourgogne Blanc comes from limestone parcels scattered around the Puligny side of Meursault. This wine always delivers: in 2023 it’s brimming with fresh pear on the nose. On the palate, it’s so textured and long, and particularly persistent for a Bourgogne. It sees 25% new oak, which is relatively high for a Bourgogne, adding savoury definition - you get a lot of bang for your buck here. It is a great introduction to the Côte d’Or.
