2023 Vosne-Romanée Aux Réas, Cyprien Arlaud Dry | Red | Still

This is one of the parcels that Cyprien and his team farm organically all year round and harvest themselves, under the négociant label. It is an excellent village lieu-dit at the southern end of Vosne, which a number of growers choose to bottle separately. It shows lots of energy and power, with a bright length, with plenty in reserve.

2023 Chambolle-Musigny, Domaine Arlaud Dry | Red | Still

This comes from various parcels the domaine owns around the village, mostly located on the Morey side of the village. It shows a certain austerity, mingled with Chambolle’s signature texture: silky, dense, and refined.

2023 Bourgogne Roncevie, Domaine Arlaud Magnum Dry | Red | Still

Cyprien makes two Bourgognes, and this is the one that comes from the domaine’s single parcel which lies just beyond the village boundary of Gevrey-Chambertin, but a stone’s throw from the village’s Grands Crus. It is a fairly serious Bourgogne, with an expressive, chewy core to it, offering up the density of Gevrey, with the open fruit to drink well from early on.

2023 Marsannay Les Grasses Têtes, Domaine Bruno Clair Dry | Red | Still

The domaine has an impressive 10 hectares in their home village of Marsannay. They bottle five separate cuvées, including the wonderful Grasses Têtes, which sits at the southern end of the commune, on the slope that rises up behind the village. Its quirky name (meaning “fat heads”) refers to the large rocks that show through the surface of the clay soil. It is typically the most structured and powerful of the Clair Marsannays, with the greatest tannic charge, recalling Gevrey-Chambertin. The 2023 has a fragrant and salty dynamism. This is quintessential Marsannay, and quintessential Clair, and a top contender for promotion to Premier Cru status.

2023 Morey-Saint-Denis En La Rue De Vergy, Domaine Bruno Clair Dry | Red | Still

This remarkable village lieu-dit sits directly above Clos de Tart, Clos des Lambrays, and Bonnes Mares, and the Clair parcel is an extension of their lauded Bonnes Mares plot. It’s hard to believe this isn’t a premier cru, really. Up here there is virtually no top soil at all, and the vines plunge straight into the limestone bedrock. The wine has abundant blackberry and wild strawberry aromas, tightly-wound tannins, and a fragrant energy.

2023 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru La Dominode, Domaine Bruno Clair Dry | Red | Still

This precious site was Bruno’s father’s favourite, and is now his son Arthur’s favourite too. It’s planted with the oldest vines of the domaine, which date back to 1902. Its east-facing amphitheatre-like form catches the sun’s rays, and the wine it produces is sappy, concentrated and complexly textured. There’s a clear density from the old vine fruit, and the energy of the vintage. In 2023, the nose has concentrated black cherries and wild strawberry and on the palate there is fine-grained, fluid tannins and a mineral finish. It’s sumptuous, spiced, and poised.

2023 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos du Fonteny, Domaine Bruno Clair Dry | Red | Still

This clos is a monopole of the domaine found right at the centre point of Gevrey, next to Ruchottes-Chambertin. It always produces grapes with millerandage (small berries) and so the wine has an intense concentration and exquisite finesse. It’s all red-fruited power and mineral length, typical of senior Gevrey terroirs. The 2023 boasts an alluring nose of sappy black cherries, red currants, and on the palate there are silky supple tannins that add to the structure of bright acidity and textural finish.

Where the Bonnes Mares is muscular and persuasive, this is fragrant and fine, with a compelling thread of crystalline red fruit reaching to an astonishing finish. This vineyard has been a family monopole since 1874. It is the domaine's flagship wine and one of just two Burgundian Grands Crus to bear the name of its owner (Romanée-Conti being the other). Mazis is the most northern of the Gevrey Grands Crus, and is renowned for making some of the most seductive wines amongst them. The Faiveley plot benefits from some very old vines, some of which were planted in 1930. This is elegant and alluring, with a spicy, rich, lavishness about it.

2023 Coteaux Bourguignons, Jean Grivot Dry | Red | Still

Unlike some Côteaux Bourguignons which are a blend of Gamay and Pinot Noir, this is 100% Gamay, from a parcel of very old vines that the Grivots inherited via the Jayers, one of whom was married to Etienne’s father. Etienne says that Henri Jayer made him promise to never, ever rip out these vines. He has kept his word, and it is now one of the wines that Etienne is most animated about in their whole cellar. Charming, earthy and brimming with bright dark cherry fruit, this is so easy to love.

2023 Hautes-Côtes de Nuits, Fontaine St Martin, Domaine Michel Gros Dry | Red | Still

This large seven-hectare vineyard in the hills above Nuits-St-Georges is a monopole of the Michel Gros domaine, and offers up great value from the Vosne grower. It has wonderful limestone soils, similar to those found on the hill of Corton, though with a much fresher climate, thanks to its elevation. The vines were planted in the 1970s and 1980s, and at full maturity are producing great concentration, leading to interesting and complex layers in the wine. It has great black cherry density with a slight chalkiness to the finish in 2023 and a firm tannic backbone.

Although they account for a minute percentage of overall production, the white wines of Nuits-St-Georges have a proud history. Interestingly, Pinot Blanc, as well as Chardonnay, is permitted under the AOC, and this cuvée from the Rions has a little dash in the blend. This is from a 1.21-hectare plot at the top of the slope, close to the domaine, with chalky soils. It’s zesty and fragrant, with peachy stone fruit and white blossom intertwined. With only around 5% new oak, this is a delicious, floral, and saline white which matches the calibre of the estate’s fantastic range of reds.

There can’t be many village parcels with a better position than this. Indeed, the bottom half of the vineyard is Premier Cru. The top half runs above Les Fuées and meets with Bonnes-Mares at its northern edge. Maxime casually shows his Nuits village after his Vosne Premier Cru when you taste the full line up in his cellar: that says really quite a lot. When you taste it you understand why. This is a sensational Nuits-St-Georges. Aux Barrièrres is a vineyard on the northern side of the appellation located just above the vineyard of Vosne-Romanée Aux Réas. From the domaine’s own vines, in 2023 Maxime destemmed all the fruit, and the resulting wine is so elegant and fine, with aromatic purity of liquorice and cherry blossom and gorgeous, fluid energy. This is the only parcel the domaine bottles separately from the other Gevrey village parcels. That is thanks to its incredible position, and the consistency of quality it delivers every year. It is sandwiched between grands crus Charmes-Chambertin and Griotte-Chambertin. It’s almost unbelievable it’s only a village lieu-dit. The Rossignol-Trapet vines lie right alongside the Joseph Roty Charmes Vieilles Vignes parcel, but the soil is more like Griotte-Chambertin just to the north. This is one of the most complete Gevrey village wines you will find: nine parcels scattered around the village which are vinified in three parts. One part comes from the light stony soil at the bottom of the valley, giving a cool elegance; the second is a cluster of parcels in the middle of the village on clay soil, giving body and structure; the third is a group of parcels below the Grands Crus, giving a complexity and finesse. Cool air comes down the valley between Morey-St-Denis and Gevrey-Chambertin, meaning Latricières is a little slower to mature than the other Gevrey Grands Crus. Tuvilains is a lovely vineyard on the Pommard side of the town. In 2023 the wine is tightly wound, with grippy, compact tannins, and a fresh cherry bite. It will need some time to come around in bottle but will reward the patient.

2023 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Champeaux, Marchand-Tawse (Vignes de la Famille Tawse) Dry | Red | Still

This remote east-facing vineyard sits at an elevation of 400m. Mark says that on a crisp summer morning you can see all the way to Mont Blanc from here. Its position means, although bathed in morning sun, it does not have much hot afternoon sun, and fruit ripens slowly here. It is often picked last, and in 2023, Mark used 26% whole-bunch, succeeding in producing a Gevrey with silky fine tannins and a velvety length.

2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Etelois, Marchand-Tawse (Vignes de la Famille Tawse) Dry | Red | Still

This is a very special village lieu-dit. It is sandwiched between two Grands Crus: Charmes-Chambertin and Griotte-Chambertin. Most people who own vines here bottle it separately, as its character is of such high quality, it approaches premier cru levels of complexity. This has Gevrey’s classical sour cherry density, and a sweet amplitude of fruit on the palate. It delivers everything you’d look for in quality Gevrey.

2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée Ronde, Marchand-Tawse (Vignes de la Famille Tawse) Dry | Red | Still

The heart of the domaine lies in Gevrey, and their village wine is one any keen follower of the estate should be familiar with. It comes from seven parcels around the village, including La Justice, Forneaux, and Clos Prieur Bas. It has a tendency to display beautiful cherry fruit characters, and in 2023 it is a paradigm pinot. A well-judged amount of whole-bunch adds just a hint of floral lift.

2023 Savigny-Lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Lavières, Marchand-Tawse (Vignes de la Famille Tawse) Dry | Red | Still

This really works in 2023. The fully destemmed fruit has been given 25% new oak, and the balance is just right. It is sweetly scented, with pliant tannins and a pretty and delicate finish. Winemaker Mark Fincham says this is the best wine in the cellar and one of his favourites of the vintage.

2023 Bourgogne Côte d'Or Pinot Noir, Marchand-Tawse Dry | Red | Still

Most of the fruit comes from the Côte de Nuits, with the majority from around Nuits itself, with the balance from the Côte de Beaune. It is a fresh, pure, and crunchy style of Bourgogne, with enough energy to give it a vibrant length. It should drink well from a young age, and buyers will note, it comes in at a pretty tidy price.

2023 Volnay 1er Cru Frémiets, Marchand-Tawse (Vignes de la Famille Tawse) Dry | Red | Still

Pascal thinks 2023 might just be the best Frémiets they have ever made. It is packed with concentrated red currant energy. It is opulent and deep, with the tension across the palate to give it a staggeringly long finish. This should be beautiful in a few years.

2023 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru, Marchand-Tawse (Vignes de la Famille Tawse) Dry | Red | Still

This is Grand Cru in every sense: its perfume is intoxicating with graceful and persistent energy. It sits at the high point of the Tawse cellar, a culmination of the seriously good winemaking going on here, and a reason why the domaine is singled out year-after-year for critical acclaim. Where the Tawse Mazoyères is broad and dense, this is long and fine, with a vibrant energy. The domaine owns three parcels in this wonderful Gevrey-Chambertin Grand Cru, including one where the vines are well over 75 years old. It is hard to overstate the quality on display here, especially in 2023 with its spicy red fruit aromatics, fragrant finesse, and intricate tannins. Wow.

2023 Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Clos de l'Arlot Blanc, Domaine de l'Arlot Dry | White | Still

This is one of few prestigious whites of the Côte de Nuits, and comes from one of the estate’s two monopole vineyards. In 2023 all the younger vines that had previously gone into La Gerbotte, have been incorporated into the senior cuvée. It is easily one of the best white wines you’ll find in the Côte de Nuits, showing bright, elegant fruit, and an appetising bitterness. It’s all really coming together for this cuvée.

2023 Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Clos de l'Arlot Rouge, Domaine de l'Arlot Dry | Red | Still

This is the historic flagship monopole of the domaine, and lies just outside the cellar door. Its distinctive amphitheatre shape is planted with some very old vines, meaning production is low, even in more plentiful years. 2023 was a spectacular vintage, there is both freshness and concentration of fruit as well as a savoury element. The wine is aromatically complex, gourmand and delicate at the same time, with a spiced, rose-petal character drawing you in. Ethereal.

2023 Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Mont des Oiseaux, Domaine de l'Arlot Dry | Red | Still

This cuvée first appeared in 2015. It is made from the young(er) vines of the Clos de l’Arlot that had once been labelled ‘Petit Arlot’. It consistently proves its worth as a separate bottling with every new vintage. The 2023 is vibrant and energetic, with succulent tannins wrapped around fluent red fruit.

2023 Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Clos des Forêts St-Georges, Domaine de l'Arlot Magnum Dry | Red | Still

This monopole vineyard spans over seven hectares of white and pink limestone hillside, accounting for almost half the domaine’s production. In 2023 it steals the show, with its plush fruit, and beautifully rounded tannins. Excellent length that plays with fruit and spice gives it a persuasive power.

2023 Morey-St-Denis 1er Cru Clos Sorbè, Domaine des Lambrays Dry | Red | Still

Like Clos Baulet, this also once used to be part of the Lambrays domaine, and 2022 saw its return after a generation of separate ownership. It is more focused and serious than the ethereal Baulet, and shows excellent potential. The tannins feel powerful yet controlled, altogether resulting in a complete and satisfying wine.

2023 Morey-St-Denis, Domaine des Lambrays Dry | Red | Still

The 2023 Morey-Saint-Denis Village comes from two parcels at the top of the slope. The wine opens with a beautifully attractive nose of red berry fruit with a little liquorice root and violet petal. There is an immediate charm here but clearly the intensity to age gracefully over the coming years.

2023 Morey-St-Denis 1er Cru Les Loups, Domaine des Lambrays Dry | Red | Still

This comes from 0.7 hectares of Premiers Crus across the village: La Riotte, Les Sorbès, and Le Village. The gentle handling in the cellar draws out the finest qualities of the fruit here: tight red berry fruit, with a fine silky texture to the tannins, and an elegant thread of acidity.
